Postproduction begins in Preproduction
SPOTTING SESSION
You need to sit down and evaluate your locked film (it is locked, right?) so that you know what needs to be done. This is the only way to create a schedule
editing is storytelling
POST PRODUCTION IS THE LAST RETELLING
Every film is written three times - once in the script, once by the actor's performances and staging, and once in the edit room. The post production process is the last chance a filmmaker has to express their vision
post production begins in preproduction
Evaluate these
five elements
Spotting sessions are PICTURE * DIALOGUE * SOUND EFECTS * VFX * MUSIC
part one - image quality
PICTURE
Since we often edit a film offline with a laptop utilizing low-resolution clips, you need to evaluate picture quality and pacing using a monitor more closely approximating the exhibition dimensions.Pay close attention to the actor's PERFORMANCES and their timing or DELIVERY. Sometimes their attention wavers and an actor out of character should never make it onto the screenMake sure to look for SOFT FOCUS of shots as well as their FRAMING as well. You may be able to change frame composition if you shot on a higher resolution than your release format or even create closeups from wide shots. Also look closely to guard against FLASHFRAMES and DEAD PIXELS
(yes, they still happen)

FOCUS AND FRAMING
EVALUATING TECHNICAL VISUAL DETAILS
Picture consists of framing, staging, and camera moves as well as focus and framing
PERFORMANCE AND DELIVERY
Evaluating Actor Preformances
Acotors act and it ios up to the director and the editor to make sure to pare the performance down to expose the very best parts of character
Dialogue - Foley - ADR - Ambience - Music
Soundtracks are constructed from many elements
The engine of postproduction are its many artists and technicians but the one who ensures the schedule will be met is the postproduction supervisor

part two - dialogue editors/ADR
DIALOGUE
Once we have the production sound synchronized to the picture
*** --often called lipsync--** then we can listen to see if imperfect dialogue can be salvaged with editing or needs to be replaced as ADR*
01: DESIGNER
Sound designer and director should FIRSTdefine the sound of the film long before anything is committed
02: editor
A triage specialist that cuts noises and replaces them with roomtone, determine what liners can be saved and...
03: ADR
...what lines need to be replaced by the actor. Working together, the producer recreate & rerecord the moment
part three - sound designs/editors
SOUND EFFECTS
[Sound effects are not just "see a truck, hear a truck". They give the audience the feeling that they are actually there, experiencing the movie. They also telling the audience what in important and therefore what to focus on in a scene

Planning makes post painless
POST PRODUCTION STARTS IN PREPRODUCTION
If you listen for noise on location before you shoot, it solves a lot of sound issues before they happen. If you plan the elements of the soundtrack before creating it, the task of building the big moments becomes easier

part four - visual artists
VISUAL EFFECTS
& FIXES
Visuakl effects do more than just create cool effects - they also fix all the problems and take out all the stuff that shouldn't be in the shot like C-stands or shotgun microphones and expand backgrounds to include things that aren't actually there like snow or the top-floors of buildings
the time to start preplanning is now
Want to Learn the Basics?
We have a whole demo schedule prepared and ready to check out. Learn the process by doing (or watch us doing it). Video walkthroughs are available but the paper of the process is free. Just learn your email and we'll send it out
part five - composition
MUSIC
The emotion of the film is in the somposition and the music created that feeling as well as defining who feel it. Whether you use a composer to write original music or add needle-drops from a royalty-free music library, is the planning that makes them successful
